Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. It places emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong/coordinated core, and improving coordination and balance.

The core, consisting of the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, and hips, is often called the “powerhouse” and is thought to be the key to a person’s stability. These muscles must be worked in a functional way and not in isolation.

The Pilates system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty, from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.
We run a range of classes from Physio led seated and mat classes (see Clinical Pilates), through to low level mat to advanced level mat classes. We also offer machine based pilates and 1-1 sessions in our studio here at WG.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a primary health care system, complementary to other medical practices. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of health problems.

Osteopaths use a combination of movement, stretching, targeted deep tissue massage and manipulation of a person’s muscles and joints to improve function, relieve pain and aid recovery.

A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilised as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis. The body has the natural ability to maintain itself and, by helping this process, an osteopath can promote restoration of normal function.
An osteopath will take the time to understand their patient, and their unique combination of symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. This helps to make an accurate diagnosis of the causes of the pain or lack of function (rather than just addressing the site of the condition), and from that, to formulate a treatment plan that will achieve the best outcome.

Osteopaths frequently work alongside other health professionals, such as GPs, nurses and midwives as well as alternative medical practitioners. Osteopathy works well to complement other medical interventions including surgery and prescribed medication. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) advises that GPs’ can safely refer patients to an osteopath for treatment. Osteopathy is available on the NHS in some areas of the UK.

At Walnut Grove we have 7 osteopaths all have different areas of special interest so please call reception for advice.

Candy has worked in the fitness industry for 14 years. She qualified as a fitness instructor in 2009 as she wanted to go to classes that fit in with my family. Early evening classes just did not work, so she started to teach late evening classes that were very popular with people in the same situation.

Candy’s love of music and dance enticed her to qualify as a Zumba instructor soon after her ETM qualification and these classes were even more successful.

Exercise classes were in conjunction alongside her main job until lockdown when she decided that her love for exercise was too important to ignore so she trained over lockdown to do her level 2 gym instructor, level 3 Personal Trainer and Diploma in GP Referral qualifications.

After qualifying as a Mental Health First-aider, Candy wanted to know what else she could do to add to a more holistic approach to fitness so she qualified as a Fitness Pilates Instructor to add to her existing classes.
